Jaye Wells - Green-Eyed Demon

Now for a paranormal book from a series I've started a while ago with Green-Eyed Demon by Jaye Wells.

Green-Eyed Demon is the third book in Jaye Wells's Sabina Kane series which picks up from where the second book left as Sabina searches for her twin sister with Adam and Gighul after her sister was kidnapped by their vampire grandmother because in her opinion, they are contaminating the vampire race with their half-vampire half-mage blood.

Rating: 10

Recommended To: Those that like vampire book, better than Twilight

Favourite Characters: Adam - he's hot and protective of Sabina and his friends and family; Sabina - spunky, strong, independent woman

Favourite Part: I didn't think about what I was doing. Didn't try to rationalize it. Didn't second-guess. I just raised my lips to his and allowed my kiss to tell him what I was feeling. And when his hands gripped my arms and he returned the kiss with a fierceness that should have scared me, I didn't pull away.

Adam and I had kissed before. Passionate kisses that left both of us wanting more. But this kiss wasn't a lusty tangle of tongues and lips like the others. Instead, it was an unfurling of emotions denied for too long. And for the first time, being in Adam's arms didn't spark the fear that normally made me want to run what he offered. - Page 229

Good Points: Sabina and Adam together; Gighul; the combination of Sabina, Adam, and Gighul; the well thought out story

Bad Points: How long it took for Sabina and Adam to really get together

I know it's annoying to compare books that have vampires in it to Twilight but that's the downside of being in a similar genre.  I have to say that these books are way better than the Twilight series which I didn't hate; I actually quite liked it because Edward and the rest of the vampires were interesting while Bella frustrated me as she was just so whiny about Edward, especially when he was gone in New Moon.  However, I like this series much more was because there is more to it other than vampires and shapeshifters; there's mancies and faeries as well as proper werewolves and vampires that die in the sun and they are all interlinked through their history which makes it really interesting.

One thing Twilight never had was a hot mage called Adam Lazarus who is affectionately called Mancy by Sabina; the picture I get in my head of Adam is pretty much what would constitute as my perfect guy: muscular, sandy brown haired, green-eyed, tall (from what I can gather during the prose), tattooed (technically birthmarked) man who is protective when it comes to those he cares about and cheeky towards Sabina when it's a light moment within the book among all the action.  His cheeky, flirty demeanour could be one thing that contributes to Sabina's attraction to him initially in the first book and this allows her to be open towards him as they create a flow of banter and the sexual tension between the two of them in this book.

Sabina is a great protagonist in my opinion because she's got a lot of fight in her, she's not just some girl swooning around waiting for a man to come along, and she takes action, in some ways this is a bad thing because it can get her in trouble but it also means she will act quickly when the time calls for it, implying she is an independent woman which Adam struggles with.  With this fight in her, it makes her spunky, meaning she will be quick of tongue which makes her quite amusing because what she says can be witty.  Another good point about Sabina is that she has grown from the angry vampire that was first shown in Red-Headed Stepchild into a caring "Magepire" who has embraced everything about herself (emotions included) and the world around her which I love about her.

As previously mentioned, there is sexual tension between Sabina and Adam by this point in this series as they constantly flirt and are attracted to one another but Sabina can't bring herself to commit to her feelings in any form because to her, their relationship would be forbidden and the same as her parents' doomed relationship.  However, the way the two of them act in Green-Eyed Demon, with Sabina being jealous of any female that comes within ten yards of Adam (a little possessive) and Adam trying to protect Sabina both physically and emotionally, the anticipation of the two of them finally becoming a couple increases which is one thing I love about this book as well as hate because, as I read the book, I just sat there yelling at them to get together because they clearly love one another.

Though not one of my favourite characters, Gighul was a good point in this book for me because he brought humour to certain situations; one example is when they've all had a rough time and gone to sleep and in the morning, Gighul admits that he tried to hump Adam in his sleep when they shared the sofa, providing a good bit of humour to what was quite hard times (Sabina desperately searching for her sister).

The trio consisting of Sabina, Adam, and Gighul makes this book a strong one for me as they all have a sense of loyalty to one another; Gighul will protect Sabina despite everything as they have become best friends in Sabina's eyes but he will also protect Adam because he has grown to care for him too.  Having already discussed Adam and Sabina's relationship, this allows them to have a strong bond which strengths them as a team and combining their love for Gighul into the mix, they make a strong trio and a force to be reckoned with in my opinion and this book shows this at the very end in the final battle.

The story was well thought out for me as it wasn't too overwhelmed with the new characters that the reader meets in New Orleans (Brook AKA Pussy Willow, Zen etc.) but the new characters could still be enjoyed as they fit in well, bringing more colour to Sabina's life in these dark times.  Despite leaving Maisie's rescue until the very end, the story wasn't overly predictable so I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to find out what happens to the inhabitants of this world.

The only downside for me was how long it took for Sabina and Adam to get together as a couple because it was clear from the beginning that they wanted one another and the occasional passion-filled kisses proved that but it took three books and some major incidents to cause Sabina and Adam to confess everything to one another and give into real emotions.  This was just frustrating; as I previously said, I was yelling at them to get together but I'm glad they finally did as Adam helped Sabina grow to accept things she hadn't been able to for fifty years and Sabina helped him loosen up from being a knight for the Mancies as she gave him something else to focus on, love for someone else and protecting that person solely.
I didn't think about what I was doing.  Didn't try to rationalize it.  Didn't second-guess.  I just raised my lips to his and allowed my kiss to tell him what I was feeling.  And when his hands gripped my arms and he returned the kiss with a fierceness that should have scared me, I didn't pull away.

This was absolutely my favourite part of Green-Eyed Demon as it was when Sabina and Adam gave into their feelings for one another; I think I cheered when this happened and gained some questionable looks from those in my house.  However, it left me wanting more because I think these moments were far and few between but I'm hoping for more moments like this in the fourth book.

Now for more Sabina Kane!!  I really want the rest of this series; I want to know what happens to Sabina and Adam and what happens in this world where the dark races live.

Predictions
1. Sabina and Adam end up having a child
2. Cain makes an appearance
3. Maisie will crack after what happened to her and Sabina will have to help her get her life back together
