It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's the August Loot Crate.
I was so excited this month when I found out about Loot Crate and what it offers. It's a subscription service that you get a box full of themed stuff sent to you once a month. As others have said, it's like a Christmas present every month from a family member who knows you're a geek/gamer. They like Looters to film when they open their Loot Crates but I don't like to hear my own voice on film so I've decided to blog about it instead. Originally, they didn't ship to the UK but obviously now they do and I get to enjoy the experience for myself, yay!
This month, the theme was Heroes which is one of the reasons I signed up to Loot Crate in the first place. Part of me was gutted that I missed last month's Loot Crate because the theme was Villains and I love comic book villains as well as movie villains.
Before I even talk about what I got inside was the box itself was great because it was decorated like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lair. While simple in design, it makes a great piece of imagination and thought that has gone into the crate itself.
The main part of the Loot Crate is a glow-in-the-dark Funko POP! figurine of Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. I was ecstatic about this addition because I loved Guardians of the Galaxy when I saw it in the cinema and I loved Groot despite the fact he only says four words in the entire film. There was something about him that made him endearing. I love Funko POP! figurines and bobble-heads and have a few of them on one of my shelves and hope to build my collection.
The second part was an Ooze Action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle figurine which was awesome because you could any of the four turtles but I got my favourite one, Raphael, which was sheer coincidence but I was so happy when I opened the box. He now sits alongside Groot amongst my figures collection which is starting to expand already.
Carrying on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pattern, we all also received a pair of sunglasses shaped like the Turtles' masks and mine was Donatello's and they are perfectly modelled by my old teddy bear, Humphrey. While I would have liked Raph's, they are still cool because you can pretend to be a ninja turtle and it's silly things like this that keep me amused.
Also in this box of random Hero items, I received some ShWings in the shape of lightning bolts to tie onto the outside of my shoes so now I have them on a pair of my Converses to make them stand out a bit.
While completely random, they added a SEGA game character air freshener into the box and fortunately I received a Sonic the Hedgehog one, my favourite SEGA character that I've loved since I was a kid. Now to work out a place to hang it; maybe in my car with the Avengers I have hanging from the rearview mirror.
I wasn't so excited about the digital content codes that they added to this month's box but that is because I don't particularly play on a lot of games but that may change in the future and this content gives me something new to explore: Doctor Who: Legacy, Defense Grid: The Awakening, Gauntlet.
To cap off this wonderful box of treats, they threw in a little bit of an anti-hero in the form of a Deadpool magnet which I loved because Deadpool is one of my favourite Marvel characters due to the particular comic style he is in, breaking the fourth wall and everything. Granted, it took a few seconds to work out who it was but now he sits pride of place on my bedside table next to this old magnet I have that reminds me of my paternal grandparents.
Every month, you get a decent sized badge as well to commemorate the theme this month and so you can build your collection. This month, there's Captain America, Batman, and Megaman featured; it's a shame they weren't in the crate though. I've stuck mine along with all my other geeky badges and patches on my rucksack that I travel with on trains and such.
Joining Loot Crate is only really worth it if you really want to receive random items like this (they do come with T-shirts sometimes as well) because you never really know what you're going to get in it and could be considered a waste of money but I see it as this random present that I get every month.
